Comment : Head rusty brown with spiky feathers on top. Slaty gray mostly, belly and flanks white. Bill orange, white patch in wing visible in flight.

View full size photo of Red-breasted Merganser in Bedford, Nova Scotia, CanadaSite Description: Bedford Basin, Dewold Park boardwalk. About 40 m off shore. They seemed to avoid the shore and a flock of ducks and seagulls nearby. Saw them here a couple weeks ago too.
Comment : Spiky crest on head visible in photo and long thin red bill, this male has a dark head, a white neck, a black back and white underparts. A greyish femail was nearby too.

View full size photo of Red-breasted Merganser in Halifax, Nova Scotia, CanadaSite Description: Just off the shore of Point Pleasant Park, seemed to be shy birds or were afraid of all the other gulls and ducks, they stayed farther off shore.
Comment : You can just barely make out the ruffled head feathers in the photo. Black head and back, breast pale cinnamon-brown, make them males.
